Our Borderlands

92-year old Janina lives with her daughter Dana in a village in Poland close to the German border. Both women embody the shared Polish-German history of the region and the violent traumas it carries.

Bringing attention to people who live in rural areas and who tend to be either romanticized or stigmatized, this film is a meditation on place and landscape, history, personal choices and loss, and all those moments between laughter, grief, and wonder.

Nasze pogranicze/Our Borderlands is a short film with a running time of 28 minutes. The film is in Polish with German and English subtitles.

For Our Borderlands, I used footage from my 2023 feature documentary In My Words. The short film was commissioned for the exhibition Nadal/Immer Noch which was curated by Jagna Domżalska and made possible with the support of the Silesian Museum and the Kunsthalle Görlitz.
